Whether you're sitting at your computer, scrolling through your smartphone, heating lunch in the microwave, or turning on a lamp, you're surrounded by electromagnetic fields—better known as EMFs. While we can't see or feel them, EMFs are both a manmade and a natural part of our world. As technology permeates our lives, exposure to EMFs has become increasingly common.
So, what exactly are EMFs, and why are so many people talking about them?
What are EMFs?
An electromagnetic field (EMF) is an area of energy produced whenever electricity is generated, transmitted, or used. EMFs are created by both natural sources and man-made technologies.
Natural sources include:
- The sun
- Lightning
- The earth's magnetic field
Man-made sources include:
- Smartphones
- Wi-Fi routers
- Cell towers
- Bluetooth devices
- Computers
- Smart watches
- Power lines
- Household appliances
- Smart home devices
Simply put, if a device uses electricity or wireless communication, it likely produces some type of electromagnetic field.
Are All EMFs the Same?
No. All EMFs are not the same. EMFs exist across a wide spectrum of frequencies and are generally divided into two categories.
1. Low-Frequency EMFs
Also called extremely low frequency (ELF) EMFs, these are produced by electrical power and many household appliances. Common sources include:
- Electrical wiring
- Refrigerators
- Hair dryers
- Vacuum cleaners
- Electric blankets
- Power lines
These EMFs are considered non-ionizing, which means they do not have enough energy to remove electrons from atoms and are not believed to directly damage DNA.
2. Radiofrequency (RF) EMFs
Radiofrequency EMFs are used to transmit wireless information. They are emitted by:
- Smartphones
- Wi-Fi routers
- Bluetooth accessories
- Smart watches
- Tablets
- Cell towers
Like low-frequency EMFs, RF electromagnetic energy is also non-ionizing. Smartphones, for example, emit RF energy whenever they communicate with a cellular network, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth device.
More About Long-Term and Cumulative Exposure to EMFs?
As technology has become woven into nearly every aspect of daily life, people are exposed to more and more man-made EMFs than ever before. Homes now commonly contain dozens of connected devices operating simultaneously. Scientists continue to study whether long-term, cumulative exposure to EMFs may have biological effects.
While some studies have reported findings that warrant further investigation, others have concluded that current evidence has not established harmful health effects from exposure below existing safety guidelines.
The fact remains that the conversation has begun. Research is ongoing and those of us at TRU47 are glad it is. We are among the many that have chosen to follow a precautionary approach by reducing unnecessary exposure when it is easy and practical to do so.
Practical Ways to Reduce Everyday Exposure
You don't need to eliminate technology from your life. Instead, consider adopting a few simple habits:
- Use speakerphone or wired headphones during long calls.
- Keep your phone out of your pocket whenever it's practical.
- Turn on Airplane Mode when wireless connections aren't needed.
- Avoid sleeping with your phone next to your pillow.
- Place Wi-Fi routers away from bedrooms and areas where people spend long periods.
- Encourage children to use devices thoughtfully and take regular breaks.
These simple concepts may help reduce direct exposure while allowing you to continue enjoying modern technology.
TRU47's Perspective on EMF Awareness
At TRU47, wellness begins with knowledge. Understanding your environment empowers you to take control of your wellness and make intentional choices that support your overall well-being.
As a wellness platform, TRU47 believes in a holistic approach to living well. We support nontoxic solutions to everyday problems, better nutrition and hydration, quality sleep, regular exercise, grounding (also known as earthing), stress management, and informed technology use. While research into EMFs continues to evolve, many people choose to be proactive by learning where EMFs come from and adopting easy and practical habits that may reduce unnecessary exposure.
Information Is Power
EMFs are part of modern life, and they're not going away. The goal isn't to fear technology, it's to understand it. By learning where EMFs originate, understanding what current science does and does not say, and making thoughtful decisions about your daily habits, you can take a more informed approach to your family's wellness.
Curious about your own level of exposure? Take TRU47's complimentary EMF Exposure Assessment to discover how much EMF you may encounter throughout the day and learn practical ways to reduce unnecessary exposure.
Because when it comes to wellness, information is one of your most valuable tools.
